Stellar evolution Stars condense from regions of space of higher matter density, yet those regions are less dense than within a vacuum chamber. These regions — known as molecular clouds — consist mostly of hydrogen, with about 23 to 28 percent helium and a few percent heavier elements. One example of such a star-forming region is the Orion Nebula. Such feedback effects, from star formation, may ultimately disrupt the cloud and prevent further star formation. All stars spend the majority of their existence as main sequence stars, fueled primarily by the nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium within their cores. However, stars of different masses have markedly different properties at various stages of their development. The ultimate fate of more massive stars differs from that of less massive stars, as do their luminosities and the impact they have on their environment. Accordingly, astronomers often group stars by their mass:

Although the exact values for the luminosity, radius, mass parameter, and mass may vary slightly in the future due to observational uncertainties, the IAU nominal constants will remain the same SI values as they remain useful measures for quoting stellar parameters. Large lengths, such as the radius of a giant star or the semi-major axis of a binary star system, are often expressed in terms of the astronomical unit — approximately equal to the mean distance between the Earth and the Sun million km or approximately 93 million miles.

In , the IAU defined the astronomical constant to be an exact length in meters:

Arthur Collins was convicted in November of spraying the caustic substance in a packed nightclub on 17 April. He has been told he will spend 20 years in jail with a further five years spent on licence. At least 22 people reported injuries after the attack, although only 14 were the subject of the charges against him. Three of the 16 who suffered chemical burns were temporarily blinded and many told Wood Green Crown Court how their injuries had affected their lives.

After Judge Noel Lucas described it as"a deliberate and calculated attack", Collins winked to his family as he was led to cells. Collins has been sentenced to 25 years Judge Lucas said: It shows someone who has shown not a shred of remorse for his actions. At his sentencing hearing on Tuesday, the court was told Collins received a caution for racially aggravated harassment for ringing the woman in the middle of the night and threatening her with an acid attack and to have her raped.

Clubbers hold their faces after acid attack After that threat, he was handed a caution after apologising and saying he had done it"out of frustration". He had a total of six previous convictions for using threatening words, possession of cocaine, drunk driving and assault. For punching a man in a nightclub on 28 December, , he was handed a six-month sentence suspended for 12 months at Woolwich Crown Court. Collins, of Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, was still subject to the suspended sentence when he carried out the attack at Mangle club in London Fields, east London.

Three of Collins" victims took to the witness stand to read their victim impact statements, but the judge"s sentencing remarks were delayed as his defence team produced a dossier which they said showed social media posts apparently proving the victims" lives had returned to some kind of normality.

Friday, October 20, The zodiacal light shines bright in a moonless sky. Malcol on Wikipedia Friday, October 20 With the Moon now gone from the predawn sky, the rest of this week offers an excellent opportunity to view the zodiacal light. From the Northern Hemisphere, early autumn is the best time of year to observe this elusive glow before sunrise.

Look for the cone-shaped glow, which points nearly straight up from the eastern horizon, shortly before morning twilight begins around 5: The Moon remains out of the morning sky until November 3, when its bright light will return and overwhelm the much fainter zodiacal light. These are Orionid meteors, which belong to an annual shower that peaks before dawn. Observers under a dark sky could see up to 20 meteors per hour shortly before twilight begins, when the constellation Orion the Hunter climbs highest in the south.

The meteors appear to radiate from a point in northern Orion.

One photograph showed a woman casually trying on a pair of stolen shoes in front of a smashed store front. A few hooligans figured the police would be so busy down the road in Tottenham that it was the perfect opportunity to rob the local Vodafone dealer. Just as some of those who took part in the Great Ikea Riot had come from as far afield as Birmingham, so agitators and opportunists from all over London and beyond flocked to Tottenham and surrounding suburbs at the weekend.

Rioters were alerted to the potential for violence against the police via anti-social network messages from some of the leading lights in the Stop The Cuts mayhem in Central London earlier this year — including wheelchair warrior Jody McIntyre, who tweeted to his 9, followers: The only real link to the Broadwater Farm riot was location, location, location.

Millions of pounds have been pumped into inner city estates in the wake of the disturbances of the early to mid s, not just in Tottenham, but also Brixton and other notorious concrete jungles across London. In the case of Broadwater Farm, it would probably have been better to raze the place to the ground and start over again. Mind you, there are probably a few year-old grandfathers around these days, so anyone over 30 counts as ancient in some communities.
